4 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 2 4 Readers choose books to read by finding just right books (not too hard, not too easy). 1.Browse through the books in the basket. 2. Read a small part (few pages). 3. Find a book that has only a few tricky words that you can read smooth and understand what you are reading.

5 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 1 Readers learn how to pick a just right book by the five finger test. Read a page in the middle of the book. Put up one finger for every clunk you have. 0 fingers – too easy 1-3 fingers – just right 4-5 fingers - quite hard 5+ too hard for now 5

6 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 2 Too Small Too Big Perfect Fit! EASY you can read the words fluently (smooth and with an interesting voice) *there often are not a lot of words on a page *you know how to say all the words *there are not a lot of pages in the book *you have a lot of schema for the subject *sometimes the book has a larger font *you totally understand the story *your reading rate may be quicker *your thinking comes easy as you read the words CHALLENGING *many of the words are too hard to decode (failed a five finger test) *you don't know what the tricky words MEAN *your reading becomes choppy more than it is fluent *you don't have any prior knowledge the subject *there are often a lot of words on the page *often the font is small *you lose focus as you are reading *you are not enjoying the book because you have to do too much word work *your thinking is confused *your reading rate slows way down JUST RIGHT *you can read most of the words *you can understand what you are reading *you enjoy the book *you may have some schema for the subject *you can read the book with smooth fluency but there are some choppy places *your reading rate is just right- not too slow and not too fast *you can figure out the tricky words and still get the meaning of the story 6

7 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 3 7 Readers help themselves stay focused by making plans for themselves. 1.Think about what you have already accomplished in the book you have been reading. 2.Think about what you want to accomplish today. What do you want your reading and thinking plan to be. 3. Say the plan aloud to yourself.

8 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 4 8 Readers stay long with a book by rereading to make it smooth. 1.Read the book through one time. 2. Reread the book a second time to make it sound smooth.

9 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 5 Readers help themselves stay focused by taking a quick stretch break, rereading the part they missed, and stopping to envision whats going on in the story. 1. Take a quick stretch break. 2. Reread the part you may have missed. 3.Stop to make a picture in your mind of what you are reading. 9

10 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 6 10 Partners show respect for their reading time together by following the procedures of partner time. 1.Partners sit hip to hip with one book out at a time. 2. Partners take turns and listen to one another.

11 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 7 Partners build their reading time together by following a partnership ritual. 1.Partners read books together. 2.Partners retell books or parts of books. 3.Partners talk together about the books. 11

12 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 8 12 Readers figure out unknown words by thinking about what would make sense. 1.Look at the picture. 2. Look at the first letter of the word. 3. Think, What word would make sense? 4. Reread the sentence to see if the word sounds right. LA

14 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 9 14 Readers figure out unknown words by using the context of the passage. 1.Think about what the passage is about. 2.Think about what word would make sense. 3.Reread the sentence to see if the word sounds right. LA

16 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 10 Readers show they understand how the classroom library is organized by following routines and procedures for book shopping. 16

17 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 11 Readers choose a reading spot by finding a place that will help them do their best reading. 1.Think to yourself… Where is a spot that I can do my important work as a reader? 2.Make sure the spot is comfortable and a place where you wont be distracted. 17

18 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day Partners come prepared to talk with their partner by choosing a book ahead of time and thinking about what he/she wants to say. 1.Choose a book that you read during workshop. 2. Think about why you liked the book and what your favorite part was. 3. Practice retelling the book so you can share it with your partner. LA

19 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 13 Readers help themselves understand the story by stopping and thinking after reading chunks of text. 1.Place a post-it note where you want to stop and think. 2. Read to the post-it note. 3. Use the Stop and Think chart to help you think about the book. 19

20 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 14 Readers help themselves understand the story by asking themselves questions as they read. 1.Stop and think about what you are reading. 2. Ask yourself questions as you read to make sure you understand what you are reading. Example: What am I wondering? What questions do I have? 20

21 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day Readers help themselves understand the story by figuring out the authors purpose. 1.Browse through the book to remind yourself of the story. 2. Ask yourself, What is the author trying to teach me? LA

22 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 16 Readers improve their fluency by reading at an appropriate rate. 1.Listen to yourself read. 2. Ask yourself, Does my reading sound too fast or too slow? 3. Adjust your reading rate so it sounds just right. 22

23 2nd Grade - Unit 1 - Readers Build Good Habits Day 17 Readers improve their fluency by using their voices to show the feeling of the story. 1.Think about how the characters are feeling in the story. 2.Make your voice match the feelings of the characters. 23

Think about who is talking and how they are feeling. 3. Match your voice to sound like the character who is talking? LA
