Welcome to Rome: enjoy your forum tour The forum became a showplace for the empire filled with statues and buildings designed to impress the people Rome ruled. How does the Roman forum compare to the Athenian agora?

Curia (senate house) The forum was Rome’s center of government including the Curia and Tabularium (hall of records). Although the forum had temples …

Imagine you are part of the crowd touring one of the world’s most famous squares… Refer to text book page 158 The forum was originally built on marsh land that was drained by the Tarquenias using ________. It is the political, religious and ___________ center of the empire of Rome.

Rostra ( behind in this picture is Basilica of Julia) The column pictured here and on the right side of your text picture is called the rostra, much like the Greek _____, it is where crowds gather to hear orators give speeches. Julius Caesar himself gathered crowds around the rostra to quell civil unrest. Today the word rostrum is derived from the Roman_____.

Arch of Septimius pictured (arch of Tiberius in text) The arch of Tiberius located behind the rostra, was built to honor Emperor Tiberius and his contributions to Rome. Three buildings to the left of the arch is where Roman justices administered the law, in the Great Basilica Julia. (named after Caesar’s daughter)

Hey who did we meet in the Basilica of Julia? Let’s walk inside the Basilica of Julia-what do we see? Examine these marble tablets displayed-on them are the basic principles of Roman Law (turn to page 159-copy them)…sound familiar? As we pass the principles, We have a flash back and meet a _____________named Ulpian. After he greets us he says: Do you agree that justice is “a constant and perpetual will to give every man his due.” Respond to him. Do the principles of Roman law support Ulpian’s definition of justice?

Temple of Saturn The Temple of Saturn, located next to the arch of Tiberius, was built to honor ____________as well as the Temple of Vespasian (who was he?) built to honor his ability to ____________.

Pantheon exterior The Pantheon looked like any other building in the forum. However, built to honor all Roman Gods it featured Roman advances in engineering that inspired awe in all who came to Rome! (advances:

Pantheon interior In the interior visitors would be inspired by the domed roof that rested on a rotunda (drum like structure). Light would enter into the building through the “eye” of the dome.

Reflections Now your tour is done…. Support or refute Howard Gibbons’ quote you picked up on your way in today. (Gibbons is known as the modern historian of ancient Rome, published from 1776- 1789 he published 3 volumes of “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”.)
