13  A verb is a word that expresses action or being. The main word in the predicate of a sentence is a verb.  EX: Garth talks constantly about the Middle Ages.  An action verb tells what the subject does, did, or will do.  EX: Many tourists visit castles in Europe.  A linking berg links the subject of a sentence with a word in the predicate that describes the subject.  EX: Garth’s stories about castles are wonderful.

What is the Reaping?  Journal writing: Pick a character (Katniss, Katniss’ mom, or Gale), think of an adjective that describes them, and find three quote that support your adjective. 17  A thesis is your “I believe” statement. We cannot use the words “I,” “me,” “my,” “mine,” “we,” “us,” “our” or “ours” in our persuasive essay. So, how do you write an “I believe statement” without using the word “I?”

18  I believe that all college students should take P.E. courses.  All college students should take P.E. courses.  But…why?

19  All college students should take physical education courses because staying active maintains physical health, helps prevent depression, and allows students opportunities to meet other students.  This thesis has an “I believe” statement and three supporting details, which will become the topic sentences of each body paragraph.

20  Let’s share.  Next, write your introductory paragraph using something to grab my attention:  A quote  A question  A statistic  A story  Then, write your thesis as the last sentence in your introductory paragraph.

21  Our own class reaping!!  Using the handout, list each member of your family who lived with you from age 12. Add one to this number. Complete the first column.  Next, multiply the numbers in the first column by 4 in the second column.  Now, write your name on that many pieces of paper and place it in our reaping boxes.  We’ll pull names on Monday!
