How to be Found Online PRESENTED BY JILLIAN BLACKBURN

Search Engine Optimization  Improve your search engine rankings.  SEO is a strategy, not a one time fix.  71% of searches result in a page 1 Google organic click, with page 2 getting only 5% of the clicks.* * According to Marketing Land

On and Off Site SEO  On site optimization is what you to do on your website. Off site optimization is what you do on other websites to benefit your website.  Think of SEO like a puzzle.

SEO History  1993-1997: Search engines are born.  2003: Google tries to make searches more relevant. Penalties for black hat tactics.  2010: SEO as we know it today.

Optimizing Website Content  Content on your website is one of the biggest contributors to search rankings.  Single message on each page.

Optimizing Website Content: Content is King  What are people searching when they’re looking for your website?  Identify keywords  Use keywords in page titles and body paragraphs.

Optimizing Website Content  Good example: “tv shop Wichita”  Putting that phrase throughout your website will help you show up for that search.  Bad example: “locally owned TV shop since 1950.”  Although being locally owned is important to your business, it’s not important when it comes to SEO, so keep things like this further down in your page content.

Identifying Keywords  Think about the main things your business is known for.  Example: Electronics store: TVs, computers, car stereos  Use synonyms and key phrases  Example: electronics store Wichita, televisions, laptops, car radio store Kansas

Identifying Keywords  Let’s practice!

Optimizing Website Content  High quality content is important.  Aim for 350 words per page.  Don’t keyword stuff.  Avoid bulleted lists.

Optimizing Website Content  Original content.  Resist “repurposed” content from other sources.  If you want to highlight a news story about your business, pull a quote from the story and then link to the actual article.

Keep Your Content Fresh  You want users to keep coming back.  Add new content regularly.  Blog

Off-Page SEO  Off-page SEO is anything outside of your website.  Three big items: Social media, links and directory listings.  Facebook & YouTube  High quality, relevant links.  Directory listings.  Listing report: getlisted.org.

Off-Page SEO: Facebook  Facebook is huge.  Utilize your About section.  Interact with your followers.

Industry Leaders  How does their SEO stand up to their competitors?

Website SEO: Misses  Home Depot: bottom of page 3 on Google for “hardware store”  What little text they have on the home page doesn’t really explain what they do.  Ace Hardware, Menard’s and Lowe’s are all on page 1.  “Hardware” is hidden two layers down in their menu.

Website SEO: Misses  Best Buy: Shows up in the middle of page 2 for “television store.”  Notice they use “TVs” throughout their site instead of “televisions.”

Website SEO: Hits  Longhorn Steakhouse comes up on the first page for “steak house.”  “Steak” is used multiple times on their home page.  What could they do rank even higher? (They’re not the #1 result.)

Mobile Responsive Websites  Google’s algorithm change.  If your website isn’t mobile responsive, you’re missing out on potential customers, period. Check your mobile-friendly status at: www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

SEO Specialists  Beware of too good to be true offers.  First page promises.  Google AdWords  Keywords  Black Hat SEO

Take Aways  Identify keywords and optimize your website content.  Make sure you’re getting the most out of Facebook.  Check that your directory listings have accurate info.  Make sure your website is mobile responsive.
