2 Democracy and Turkey A Brief Description 2 Democratic History Turkey is the only Muslim Democratic Country, which makes it unique and inpires other muslim countries. Parliamentary Democracy There are 4 political parties in the parliament after the election held on June 7th, 2015 Democratic Institutions There are two kinds of democratic institutions in Turkey. Turkey is a democracy with a tradition going back to 1945, when the a presidential regime set up by the founder of the modern Turkish state, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk gave place to a multi-party political system. A traditional ally of the US, Turkey has one of the healthiest democratic systems in the Muslim world. The Republic of Turkey is a parliamentary democracy where political parties compete at elections every four years to form the government. The president is elected directly by the voters but his position is largely ceremonial, with real power concentrated in the hands of the prime minister and his cabinet. Democratic instutitions within the formation of the state and the democratic institutions run by public bodies both of which carry out their missions in collaboration protecting human rights and the well- being of general public and the specific groups they stand for.

4 Democratic Institutions Independant and Governmental Democratic Institutions 4 Chidren’s Right Center The center, a non government independent organization, defends children’s rights and educates them about their democratic rights for being conscious citizens. Human Rights Association Amnesty International Turkey Branch The aim is to ensure access the human rights adopted by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all other international human rights standards. Turkish Human Rights Foundation The foundation, a non-govenmental and independant assosiation was established by 32 intellectual human rights defenders in 1990.Their primarily mission is to defend the rights of the victims of torture and their families. NDI – National Democratic Institute NDI promotes openness, accountability and citizen participation in the political process along with the development of a strong, dynamic civil society. Based in Ankara since 1997. Centered in Ankara, The association is one of the leading institutions in the struggle for human rights in Turkey.

5 Democratic Institutions Independant and Governmental Democratic Institutions 5 This association was established to defend the rights of immigrants who sought refuge in our country. It was founded in Izmir on October 31st, 2008. Association for Solidarity with Refugees Kaos aims to adopt the values of freedom of gay men and women performing homosexual existence and cultivates their social peace, the peace and prosperity of the development of individual, social and cultural life. Kaos Gay and Lesbian Cultural Research and Solidarity Association Founded in 1990, the foundation provides a legal and practical support to women exposed to violence, and creates a link of solidarity with women who face violence and aims to promote the fight against violence in the family. Purple Roof Women's Shelter Foundation A non – profit environmental organization has been struggling to stop environmental massacre around the world since 1971, has an office in Turkey for the same purposes. Greenpeace Turkey Office CSDC aims at achieving a strong and democratic society. The mission of CSDC is to ensure the development of the participation of civil society in democratic initiatives in the country. Civil Society Development Center (CSDC)

6 Democracy and Human Rights Centers in Turkey Ankara University Human Rights Research and Education Centre Founded in 1978. It is the first human rights center established by a university. Istanbul Bilgi University Human Rights Law Research Center Founded in 2000. Istanbul University Human Rights Law Research Center Founded in 1997. TODAIE Human Rights Research and Collection Center Founded in 1975. It also has an international magazine called ‘’ The Yearbook of Human Rights ‘’ Turkey Law Association Human Rights Center Founded in 2001. All these centers work to support and develop human rights carrying out various activities to create an awareness on individuals own rights for a happy and peaceful life in Turkey.
