3 Leading to the Renaissance… History occurs like a pendulum… Between 500 BC and 500 AD there was a surge of new ideas from the Greek and then the Roman Empires. 4 What caused this shift? A shift in the class system  In the middle ages, there was the system of the Nobles and the peasants – the very rich and the very poor  The Renaissance saw an appearance of a middle class- merchant bankers (like the Medici’s, more to come) This new middle class wanted to show there wealth, often through the commission of artwork.

5 What caused this shift? The Turks who lost their lands during the crusades, were now reclaiming their lands. The threat of invasion increased and the merchants, scholars and priests living in these areas began to flee to the west- especially Italy. With them they brought back treasures, artifacts, paintings and the only remaining classical manuscripts (books).
