2 In this lesson, you will be able to  define communication.  recognize different ways of communicating.  list ways of speaking clearly and listening carefully.  demonstrate communication skills.

4 Communicating Effectively Healthy relationships depend on good communication skills. Careful listening is important for effective communication. Careful listening shows that you are interested in what the other person wants to share

8 What I Learned Explain Explain how body language plays a part in communication. Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: Body language gives words extra meaning. It can reinforce meaning or send a different message. Body language also shows that you are listening carefully.

9 Thinking Critically Apply Imagine you are having an emotional discussion with a friend. Each of your friend’s comments begin with “You always…” or “You make me feel…” and other similar phrases. How would you react to hearing them? Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: I would feel attacked or criticized.

10 Thinking Critically Synthesize What are some nonverbal ways to show consideration for others? Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: waving, smiling, applauding, or high-fiving

11 Applying Health Skills Communication Skills Using tact is an important skill. Imagine that a friend asked for your opinion about a jacket he or she was thinking about buying. You don’t think the jacket looks good. How might you give your opinion honestly But tactfully? Lesson 1 Review Answer should include statements about the jacket that will not hurt the other person’s feeling.
