2 Missouri Compromise of 1820 Missouri—entering the union—free or slave state? Too far “north” to be considered a slave state Congress—enter as a slave state, as Maine enters as a free state 36*30—Missouri to Pacific Ocean—south of line; slave state

4 The Compromise of 1850 After the Mexican War—California—wanted to enter the union as a free state—36*30 cut the state in half What should be determined?

5 California enters union as a free state. Utah and Mexico—popular sovereignty Slave trade ended in Washington DC Fugitive slave law passed(North no longer a haven for slaves)

7 Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 Cause—people began to move west of Missouri into unorganized territories Popular sovereignty– Nebraska would enter as a free state; Kansas enters as a slave state Hoping to maintain the balance of free/slave states in Congress Repealed the 36*30 line of the Missouri Compromise Anyone was able to emigrate to Kansas—encouraged people of pro/anti slavery to move to the area Led to issues within these territories –”Bleeding Kansas”
