2 BACKGROUND Missouri Compromise settled the issue of slavery in Louisiana territory in 1821. By the 1840s, the US believes it has the duty to expand westward to the Pacific Ocean. This idea is called Manifest Destiny! Also by 1840, sectionalism has become a major problem with people taking different views on slavery

5 WESTWARD EXPANSION US gets new land after winning the Mexican War in The land is called the Mexican Cession. In 1849, the California Gold Rush quickly organizes California and it wants to enter the Union as a free state

Settle a boarder dispute between Texas & New Mexico Kansas-Nebraska Act Divides territory into 2 territories: Kansas & Nebraska Opens both territories to slavery by popular sovereignty

7 POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY Popular Sovereignty is defined as allowing people of a territory to vote on the issue of slavery. **All these compromises were attempts to keep peace and avoid war…. ….THEY DON’T WORK!!!.....
