3 Jose de Escandon (1750’s) Military commander and governor of Nuevo Santander (region of New Spain, including south Texas, around present-day, Laredo, Tx) Led Spain’s expansion effort in South Texas Sent settler’s, soldiers and priests to settle the lands between the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers; establishing missions, presidios and settlements Moved La Bahia mission and presidio from the Guadalupe River to the present-day site of Goliad Summarize in your Notes

4 Mission and Presidio La Bahia Originally founded in 1721 on the ruins of the French Fort St. Louis on Texas coast 1726 moved to along the Guadalupe River due to conflicts with Native Americans in the area on the coast 1747 moved again by Jose de Escandon to present site near Goliad, Tx.

13 Camino Real Royal Highway from San Juan Bautista Mission along the Rio Grande River, through San Antonio to Nacogdoches in East Texas. How does that benefit the Spanish?

14 Spanish control over Texas in early 1800’s In 1800, the Louisiana Territory went back to France and in 1803 sold the territory to the United States. This gave Spanish Texas a new “neighbor” – the United States – a young nation, eager to expand. Class differences in Mexico caused unrest 1810 – a revolt in Mexico as people there wanted freedom from Spain 1810 - Father Miguel Hidalgo issued his “Cry of Dolores” speech encouraging lower class people to revolt and promoting independence. He was killed by Spanish soldiers, many of his followers escaped into Texas and the United States.

Based on his report, Spain closes most missions, leaving only San Antonio and La Bahia areas 1782 – Mission San Jose and other missions are built in San Antonio 1806 – Neutral Ground Agreement – between US and New Spain; so no US or Spanish troops could be there until border dispute settled. PROBLEM: allowed for outlaws to move in. 1810 - Father Miguel Hidalgo issued his “Cry of Dolores” speech encouraging lower class people to revolt and promoting independence. 1819 – Adams-Onis Treaty US acquired Florida Set border between Texas and Louisiana as the Sabine River US agreed that Spain owned Texas

20 Make an Advertisement for your own Filibuster expedition On a piece of paper (I will provide), make an advertisement to encourage other Americans to join your filibuster expedition into Spanish Texas. -Include the goal or purpose of your expedition -Include why they should join you and what they will gain -Include artwork to illustrate what you hope to accomplish -Include your name (you are the leader of the trip!) Several students will present their work. Everyone will turn in for a grade.

21 Closure On a piece of paper, write about what life was like for a Native American in a Spanish mission. Give details!! Write a MINIMUM of 8 sentences. Turn in for a grade.
