A new way of communicating (Yes, it’s a new language!)  Learn by doing  Little consequence of failure  Technology is not changing the world, the way we use it is.

Bridging the digital divide

PRESSURE PRESSURE PRESSURE! Can we go from this ? To this?

Administration District Initiatives Parent Groups Teacher Groups Long-term vision Ongoing costs Educational Benefit DistrictSchool  Federal, State and Local initiatives  E-Rate, NGA, STEM Summit, etc  Political Pressure  Parent Groups  Teacher Groups  Long-term vision  Ongoing costs  Educational Benefit

On the front lines Last to be told about new tech First to be called Must be an expert in everything Must always be available TeachersSupport Staff  Way out of our comfort zones  Feel like we are teaching our own subject in a foreign language we don’t understand  Expectation to be an “Expert”  Direct parental pressure  Unclear expectations

Does technology actually help? No evidence that technology improves test scores How to we measure the value of technology? If we can’t measure it, why should we use it? Are One-to-One Laptop Programs Worth the Investment? By: Eamonn O'Donovan, District Administration, Feb 2009

Why should we use technology? Because it is the language that our students speak Because it is here and it is expanding at an astounding pace. Because it gives us the opportunity to shape the future.

What do I have to do as a teacher? Be a role model Don’t be afraid to fail! Push ALL the buttons! Ask your students for suggestions When nothing works, have a backup plan Use your tech support Ask before you need it Be an advocate Don’t let other people make all the decisions for you Only you can tell people what works and what doesn’t You have the opportunity to change the way tech is used

No, but seriously, what do I need to do? SAMR model Give students a framework you are comfortable with Let students explore Let students support each other Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

What do I do as an administrator? Be a role model Use the same technology that your staff has to use Show them you believe in the changes you are advocating Get feedback about what works and what doesn’t Administrators do not have to be experts Be an advocate Use feedback and research to advocate best practices Seek out the technology you want Ensure that enough consideration is given to ongoing support Technology Standard for School Administrators, Bill Campbell, 2001, Principal Leadership

Administration Ongoing Training Mentoring, Coaching Constant push Clear expectations Educate parents on the goals How students and teachers will use the new technology How the school will evaluate the success Identify pitfalls and how to address them For StaffFor parents

Results from informal survey Comfort Level With iPadsComfort Level Integrating iPads

What do I have to do as support staff? Be a role model Use the tech your users have to contend with Enforce best practices on yourself first Empathize with Technophobes Be an advocate You are not in the back room any more You are directly improving education!

Summary Technology is a new and expanding language. We need to model appropriate use of technology in our content areas. We need to advocate for ourselves and our students. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed. It’s great for students to see us overcome our own challenges.
