Circulatory Disorders

Heart Attack A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped. The reduction happens when one or more of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle is blocked. This is usually caused by the buildup of plaque (deposits of fat- like substances), a process called atherosclerosis.

Heart Attack If the blood supply is cut off for more than a few minutes, muscle cells suffer permanent injury and die. This can kill or disable someone, depending on how much heart muscle is damaged.

Heart Attack Electrocardiograph -graphical record that will show if the heart rate and rhythm are normal or if heart damage has occurred.

Cardiac Catherization A narrow tube (catheter) is threads into an artery in the groin area. The catheter is threaded through the artery to the blocked area in the coronary artery. This procedure can be used to pinpoint the exact location of the blockage.

Angioplasty When the catheter is in place, a second thinner catheter with a very small deflated balloon at the tip is threaded through the first catheter.

When the balloon is pushed through the blockage, it is inflated, opening the passage to allow blood flow. The balloon is then deflated and removed.

Stent A fine metallic mesh tube that remains in place in the artery and prevents the artery from narrowing again.

Alternative treatment Bypass Surgery If angioplasty is not effective, coronary bypass surgery is the most common treatment. Surgeons use a piece of vein from your body (usually the leg) to bypass the blocked area of the coronary artery.
