2 Do Now: What are some rivalries you know about? List a few

3 Berlin Wall You are now divided as were the Germans and Europe. Those in the EAST are under Communist control. You cannot have contact with those in WESTERN Europe. WESTERN Europe is democratic, and life is better. America supports you. Families, friends, husbands and wives, were separated. The only chance of contacting your loved one was through waving. Question: What would you do?

1. Try to jump the wall or climb it- You were shot at. Most likely you got hit and were injured or died 2. Dig a tunnel-got caught, you were machine-gunned to death 3. One guy tried to flee East Berlin in a balloon, shot down and killed At least 100,000 jailed for trying to escape East Berlin. 268 known murders

U2 Spy Plane flown by Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the USSR. America was spying on the Soviets, which infuriated Nikita Khrushchev. Powers was suppose to be held prisoner for ten years in the USSR. Released after two years in exchange for a Soviet spy. The Rosenbergs- found guilty of giving US secrets on developing the H-Bomb to the Soviets. They were executed in 1953

What were some of the competitions the two sides engaged in? Do you think that spying is still going on today? 4. Research the term “Domino Theory” and explain how it connects to the wars we fought in Korea and Vietnam. 5. How would missiles in Cuba create a fear in the United States during this period of time?
