3. The Corrupt Bargain…… 1824 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. A hotly contested election. 4 candidates: Andrew Jackson (Dem.-Rep) William Crawford ( Dem.-Rep) Henry Clay (Federalist-Whig), and Quincy Adams (Dem. Rep). A sectional race and one of strong personalities. The “star” was Andrew Jackson. Jackson and Crawford drew from the South, Jackson and Clay divided the West, Adams drew from the Mid – Atlantic and North East. This was the first election in which the Popular votes totals were announced to the public. Jackson won the Popular vote with 152,933 (42%) to Adams 115,696 (32%) but no one won the majority of the Electors with Jackson winning 99 and Adams winning 84, the remaining 78 being divided between Crawford and Clay. Congress would have to decide. According to the 12 th Amendment the lowest total would be dropped so Clay was removed for consideration. Clay made a speech endorsing Quincy Adams and asking his supporters to vote for Adams – they did and Adams was named President. Adams appointed Henry Clay his Sec. of State and Andrew Jackson claimed a deal had been made. This became known as the “Corrupt Bargain.”
