Results of the Election Jackson had the most popular and electoral votes but not a majority of electoral votes (over 50%) Adams had the 2 nd most popular & electoral votes Crawford finished 3 rd and Clay 4 th in electoral votes No candidate won a majority of electoral votes The Constitution states, “That when no candidate for President wins a majority of electoral votes the House of Representatives shall choose from the top 3 finishers.”

And the Winner Was? Clay was out of the running for President, but as the Speaker (leader) of the House, he could still help influence the election Clay convinced them to back Adams, and the House of Reps. picked Adams as President not Jackson In return, Adams made Clay his Secretary of State Jackson who should have won was furious and claimed that Adams and Clay made “A Corrupt Bargain” and stole this election from him.
