the study of inventory and structure of the sounds of language.  Human can produce any number of sounds including those we never heard of before.  The class of possible speech sound is universal PHONETICS

1. THE SOUND PRODUCING SYSTEM THE SOUND PRODUCING SYSTEM 2. SOUND CLASS SOUND CLASS 3. MANNER OF ARTICULATION MANNER OF ARTICULATION

Sound is produced when air is pumped out of our lungs Then, air is filtered by other mechanisms (speech mechanisms) to produce sounds. These mechanisms are parts of the vocal tract

Sounds of language can be grouped into three classes based on the phonetic properties they share; Consonants Vowels Glides

Made with a narrow or complete closure of the vocal tract. Airflow is blocked momentarily so that noise is produced as air flows past the constriction. Either voiced or voiceless.Less louder and less longer lasting than vowels

VOWELS produced without interruption to the passage of air thru the vocal tract; - the vocal tract acts as a resonating chamber for an airstream vibrating from the action of the vocal folds; -All vowels are voiced
