2 The Threat Did you know that in 50 years, almost all the fish will be extinct… that is, if we don’t do something about it. The scientists stated that it was the result of over fishing. In other words, fishing too much and too often. The total amount of fish caught by fisheries in 2000 was about 86 million tons! When someone says, salmon, bass, pike, mackerel, catfish, what do you think of? Dinner right? But these are fishes that are very important to marine biodiversity. In Japan, some fishermen are even catching dolphins and whales! The dolphins are sometimes sold as whale meat because whales are more difficult to catch. This kind of cruelty is inexcusable and if humans keep doing this,

In Japan, some fishermen are even catching dolphins and whales! The dolphins are sometimes sold as whale meat because whales are more difficult to catch. This kind of cruelty is inexcusable and if humans keep doing this, our lovable bottle-nosed friends will become endangered.

4 What Can We Do? If you find anything harmful to fish like oil or sewage leaking into a stream, pond, or lake, contact your local department of environmental protection. Help protect the water quality in your community by working with an organization to plant trees by the river. These trees will help protect the water quality by letting less soil wash into the stream. Pick up any litter that you see near waterways and beaches. Get you friends to help, too. Don’t use too many balloons for celebration, especially non-latex ones that don’t break down. These balloons end up In the water where animals might eat them and get tangled in them. When you go fishing, never throw used fishing lines in the water. The animals might get their mouths wrapped in it and die from starvation. If you see any old lines in the water, pick it up and throw it away.
