Math Intervention Focusing on Interventions in Mathematics

Guiding Questions

What do we want all students to learn?

How will we know when they have learned it?

How will we respond when they don’t learn?

How will we respond when they already know it?

How do we engage in relevant pedagogy and professional development to ensure that we are collectively answering these questions?

An Intervention Model All HCPSS Students Some HCPSS Students Few HCPSS Students Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3

The Intervention Process

Screen all students to identify those at risk for falling below grade level and those who are below grade level. Consider multiple data points in your selection including (but not limited to): HCPSS Parts 1, 2, & 3; HCPSS unit test pretest and post test data, MSA/ SAT 10 data, SAW 3 data, teacher observation, number sense assessment, etc. Note: Those students participating in Academic Intervention and/or Interventions from previous school year should be closely monitored. Step 1:

Step 2: Collectively decide on groupings/interventionists for students falling into either Tier 2 or Tier 3.

Step 3: Begin explicit, systematic instruction for targeted area of need. Provide models (manipulatives), guided practice, corrective feedback and frequent review. Include instruction on problem solving using appropriate mathematics vocabulary. Balance content delivery, for example: 1/3 current, 1/3 missed, 1/3 future.

Step 4: Assess student after 6-8 weeks, using that data to inform any future intervention. If the student demonstrates mastery of targeted skills, lower the student’s tier.

How often should the intervention occur? Analyze the assessment data to determine the needs of the student.
