The Hunger Games By: Maite Garcia

Happy Hunger Games... And May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor!!! Today is Reaping Day, where each of the twelve districts must send a girl and boy ages 12 – 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, an event held by the Capital in which the 24 tributes must kill each other and survive for an unknown period of time in an arena. Only one will come out. 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers after her little sister, Prim, is chosen to be the female tribute for the Games. She steps up to the platform, and waits for the male tribute, 16-year-old Peeta Mellark, who once saves Katniss and her mother and sister from starving after her father died in a mining accident. From there, they are taken into the custody of the Peacekeepers to be taken to the Capitol.

Katniss… The Girl Who Was On Fire. Once they arrive at the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta are taken to Cinna (Katniss) and Portia (Peeta). They are to be prepared to be shown off to the world, so they will represent their district. Since District 12 is known for mining, Katniss and Peeta are dressed up in a black unitard, and their accessories are lit up with a safety flame. Once they are presented, the crowd loves them. Katniss soon becomes known as “The Girl Who Was On Fire”. Soon after, there is an introductory ceremony in which Katniss is wearing a dress in which, if she twirls around, it appears that she is engulfed in flames. Also, it is known at the ceremony that Peeta tells the world that he has been in love with Katniss for a long time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Let the Seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games begin! Katniss, Peeta, and the other 22 tributes are sent to the arena. The Hunger Games have begun! 11 tributes are killed on the first day. Katniss finds out that Peeta has joined the Careers, a group of tributes from the richer districts that are more aggressive than the other ones, but Katniss finds out that they will kill Peeta once all the other tributes are dead. Katniss teams up with a girl named Rue, but soon Rue is killed. Katniss goes on by herself, and soon she finds Peeta, and he is injured severely. She takes him up to a cave and hides there with him until he gets better. They stay there for several days, in which Katniss gets feelings for Peeta, until only Cato, the male tribute from District 2, is left. Katniss finds out that if the tributes of one district are willing to, they can win as a district. Katniss and Peeta team up to kill Cato, in which they succeed, but they notice that the Games are not over. They must kill each other. Katniss comes up with an idea. Either the Capitol lets them win as a district, or they will have no winner at all. So they grab some poisonous berries, and when they are about to eat them, they are told to stop. They have both won the hunger Games.

The End Katniss and Peeta are taken on a Victor’s Tour around all of the districts, and Peeta got his leg amputated due to the injuries received during the Games. While about to go on stage, Haymitch, their coach, is angry because the Capitol thinks that the way that they won was a form of rebellion. The Capitol is angry at this. Also, Peeta finds out and thinks that Katniss being in love with him was just a plan from Haymitch just to get sponsors during the game. Peeta is upset, and he leaves Katniss.
