4. Concrete & Abstract Nouns Concrete noun - refers to a physical, and usually visible or touchable, object or substance.  Examples: board, desk, floor, book, stove Abstract noun - denoting an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object  Examples: silence, love, strength, honesty, courage, faith

Singular, Collective, Plural Singular Noun – a form of noun meaning one of something.  Examples: pencil, pen, paper, towel, desk Collective Noun - a noun that denotes a group of individuals.  Examples: assembly, family, crew Plural Noun – a form of noun meaning more than one of something.  Examples: pencils, pens, papers, towels, desks

6. Compound Nouns - two or more nouns combined to form a single noun. Open Compound Noun – a compound word with spaces in between the new word.  Example: living room, dinner table, full moon. Closed Compound Noun – two words that form a new word with NO spaces in between.  Example: notebook, bookstore, fireman Hyphenated Compound Noun – has a hyphen in between the words that form the new word.  Example: mother-in-law, factory-made, ten-year-old
