Presentation on theme: "Pre-Activity Safety Plan Preparation"— Presentation transcript:

1 Pre-Activity Safety Plan Preparation
Critical Information before we get started: Restroom locations Emergency procedures Recognized hazards 1

2 Pre-Activity Safety Plan Preparation
This training will cover the following: Recognizing hazards Controlling hazards Generate Pre-Activity Safety Plan (PASP) 1

3 Recognizing Hazards Wrong!
Only experts can do hazard assessments right? Wrong! We each do hazard assessments several times a day. (walking, driving, eating, conversing with spouse) We only need a basic understanding of operation tasks and associated hazards What are other hazard assessments do we do regularly? 1

4 Recognizing Hazards Basic Operation Understanding
Tasks being performed Tools being used Environmental conditions Basic Hazard Understanding Hazards associated with task Hazard associated with tools Hazards associated with environmental conditions We have a good understanding of operation when assigned, but it is always incomplete

5 Assess the hazards and controls prior to exposure
Recognizing Hazards Assess the hazards and controls prior to exposure We have a good understanding of operation when assigned, but it is always incomplete

6 “Shoveling snow from sidewalk”
Recognizing Hazards Basic Operation Understanding Operation being Performed “Shoveling snow from sidewalk” Individual tasks Retrieving and returning tools Shoveling sidewalk Tools being used Snow Shovel Environmental conditions Slick working surfaces Cold Basic Hazard Understanding Hazards associated with task Traffic near storage area in garage Strains & Sprains Hazard associated with tools Hand, foot and back injuries Hazards associated with environmental conditions Slip and fall Exposure to cold

7 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard
Probability/severity (risk) The Accident equation: Hazard * Exposure = Risk of Occurrence Eliminate or reduce either and reduce risk of occurrence Hazard control includes exposure control

8 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard Priority of Hazard Control
Elimination of hazard; Substitution of hazardous processes or materials with safer ones; Engineering controls; Administrative controls; And lastly personal protective equipment

9 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard
Priority of Hazard Control Elimination of hazard; Substitution of hazardous processes or materials with safer ones; Control Examples Enclose sidewalk prior to snowfall Close sidewalk after snowfall Apply chemical de-icer prior to snowfall rather than remove snow after event Alternate route of foot traffic (Covered access)

10 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard
Priority of Hazard Control Engineering controls; Administrative controls; Personal protective equipment Control Examples Use mechanized device (snow blower / plow) Limit individual employee exposure (trade off on task) Gloves/Boots/Corkies Cold weather clothing

11 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard
Priority of Hazard Control Elimination of hazard; Substitution of hazardous processes or materials with safer ones; Engineering controls; Administrative controls; And lastly personal protective equipment

12 Information to be included
PASP Information to be included Description of operation and location Address emergency procedures, locations and contact information Specific tasks being performed Tools being used to perform task Associated hazards and their controls High risk activities Ergonomic risk factors Training and Education Better mousetrap Slip/trip and fall PowerPoint presentation1 PowerPoint presentation 2 Driving safety (backing) Required PPE Additional plans associated with operation Specific training required Employees involved

13 Form should follow function
PASP Form should follow function

14 Hazard Control Control of Recognized Hazard
Form should follow function Edit template or start new document Located on Safety web page are tools How do I create a PASP Retrieved a template from PASP Library Review onsite with all affected employees prior to beginning any activity Hand edit PASP during onsite review and all hands sign/initial Keep PASP onsite until task is complete Edit PASP electronically, and save for future template File PASP for record

15 PASP Activity Generate PASP for: __________
