Soobin Kang Second Committee Intern

 Issues relating to economic growth and development - macroeconomic policy questions including international trade, international financial system, external debt sustainability and commodities. - sustainable development, human settlements - poverty eradication - globalization and interdependence - information and communication technologies for development.  Issues relating to Groups of Countries in special situations - such as the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs).  The item on permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources.

 Low-lying coastal countries that tend to share similar sustainable development challenges, including small but growing populations, limited resources, remoteness, susceptibility to natural disasters, vulnerability to external shocks, excessive dependence on international trade, and fragile environments.sustainable developmentnatural disastersinternational trade

 Narrow resource base  Small domestic markets  Heavy dependence on external and remote markets  Long distances from export markets and import resources

 Fragile natural environments  Climate Change: Existential Threat and Threat Multiplier  Little resilience to natural disasters  World Bank: 2/3 of countries with highest disaster losses relative to GDP are small island states

 The United Nations has been assisting and extending cooperation to SIDS through the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of SIDS finalized at the Global Conference held in Barbados in 1994, known also as the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA). The Priority area of BPoA are: - Human Resource Development - Climate Change & Sea-level Rise - Management of waste - Energy Resources - etc

 The very survival of certain low- lying SIDS will be threatened.  Damage coral reefs and other fragile island ecosystem.  Increased frequency and intensity of storm events

 An international environmental treaty (currently the only international climate policy venue with broad legitimacy) negotiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992.  The objective of the treaty: "stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system"

 An international agreement linked to the UNFCCC, which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets.  The principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities.“  ROK: Non-Annex B parties without binding targets

 A crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate (post-2020), applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2degree

 The future agreement must equally on mitigation (i.e. reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and societies' adaptation to existing climate changes.  Intended Nationally Determined Contributions(INDC): Each country(including China, India and Korea) must publish its national contribution, presenting its national efforts, as soon as possible and before COP21.  Financial support for developing countries.  Implementing ambitious solutions.

 1. Should we put greater emphasis on sustainable development on developing countries or on environmental protection?  2. Are only developed countries responsible for climate change issues in regards to Kyoto protocol?

Thank you!
