4 Genghis Khan Genghis Khan was born Temujin in Central Asia in the 1100’s. Temujin became a courageous warrior and a skilled leader. 6 Expansion to the West There were several reasons as to why the Mongols were victorious in battle. The Mongols were skilled horsemen and bowmen. They also borrowed new military technology, like that of cannons , from the Chinese and Turks. Under Genghis Khan, the Mongols invaded Eastern Europe (Constantinople and Russia) After Genghis Khan’s death, Mongols went on to conquer much of the Middle East (Persia).

7 Mongol Dynasty In 1279, Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, completed the job of conquering China. He went on to rule not only China, but Korea, Tibet, and Vietnam. Kublai Khan adopted a Chinese name for his dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty. He did not want the Mongols to become absorbed into Chinese culture, so he gave all high government jobs to Mongol workers and allowed only Mongols to serve in the army.

8 Mongol Impact Mongol power reached its greatest extent by about 1300.
Rule stretched throughout Central Asia and China, into Russia and Europe, and into Southwest Asia and India. Despite brutality in war, most Mongol leaders ruled with tolerance. Genghis Khan respected academics, artists, and artisans. Conquered peoples were often allowed to live as they did before, as long as they paid tribute to the Mongols.

9 Long-Term Effect of Mongolian Rule
Russia The absolute rule of the Mongols in Russia served as a model for later Russian rulers. Mongols also were responsible for isolating Russia from the rest of Europe. This isolation deprived Russia of many advances in the arts and sciences of the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance. China The Yuan Dynasty flourished under Kublai Khan for 150 years. Pax Mongolia- time period of political stability brought about by the Mongols throughout Asia. Along with stability, this time period was known for extensive trading and cultural diffusion along the Silk Road (gun powder, porcelain).
