5 5 North Springs HS Important Aspects “Recognize extreme diversity and that a one-size fits all student plan will not work. Do not take privileges and programs away from strong students and teachers because they are abused by others.” “A new principal should be sensitive to or understand the population/cultural make up of the school and needs of the student body.” “Diversity of the students -- racial, socioeconomic and scholastic.” “This is a very diverse school....interest-wise, ethnically, financially,, intellectually and athletically.” Honoring, supporting, and celebrating the diverse student population was a central theme for North Springs High School. “This school has an opportunity to be great; there is a unique positive student culture that supports individual identities, minimizing teenage angst and maximizing their ability to focus on their learning and development.”

6 North Springs HS Important Aspects 6 There is a strong sentiment for supporting the North Springs teaching staff and existing programs at the school. “Make teachers feel valued in the decision making.” “Essential to enhance key programs; need to establish reputation of high academic achievement.” “Teacher retention is poor, therefore students suffer.” “The dual-magnet program and preserving its integrity- this has been taken less seriously over the years and is a major asset to our school and community.” “The school has some really good teachers that want to be part of a solution.” “We need to strengthen our magnet programs.” “Create an active mentor program to support new teachers to this school and to the profession.” “Teachers are the heart and soul of the school.”

7 Participants indicated mixed feelings about operations and expectations. North Springs HS Important Aspects “Students need to be challenged to exceed expectations and not just meet basic standards.” “Discipline and safety is highest priority. Can't teach or learn without a safe secure environment.” “Teachers teach 6 out of 7 periods and multiple certified NS staff are not teaching in the classroom.” “Be committed to recognizing achievement for all students, not just the top 1%.” “There should be equity in teaching load among ALL teachers. Currently NOT so.” “Providing an environment of safety, support, comfort, and providing the students with the necessary tools that they need in order to be competitive.”
