1 BISMILLAH ELECTRICAL HAZARDS & CONTROL

2 Why should you be concerned about electrical hazards?  Electricity has long been recognized as a serious workplace hazard, exposing employees to electric shock, burns, fires, and explosions. In 1999, for example, 278 workers died from electrocutions at work, accounting for almost 5 percent of all on-the-job fatalities that year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. What makes these statistics more tragic is that most of these fatalities could have been easily avoided.

3 The Basics about Electrical Hazards è Electricity has the potential to seriously injure or kill. è The fitting of Residual current Devices (RCDs) will reduce the likelihood of electrical shock or electrocutions. è It is also important to ensure that electrical equipment are regularly inspected and maintained.

4 Six questions and answers for everyone 1. What is health and safety all about? è Preventing people from being harmed by work or becoming ill by taking the right precautions - and providing a satisfactory working environment. 2. Why are there health and safety laws? è Because health and safety at work is so important, there are rules which require all of us not to put ourselves or others in danger. The law is also there to protect the public from workplace dangers.

5 3. Do health and safety laws apply to me? è Yes. To all businesses, however small; also to the self-employed and to employees. 4. Who enforces health and safety law? è Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or your local authority. For example: HSE at factories, farms and building sites; local authorities in offices, shops, hotels and catering, and leisure activities.

6 5. What do inspectors actually do? è They visit workplaces to check that people are sticking to the rules. They investigate some accidents and complaints but mainly they help you to understand what you need to do. They enforce only when something is seriously wrong. 6. Do I have to report injuries at work? è Yes, and other incidents. For information on which ones and who should report them,

7 Preventing Electrical Hazards  Electrical accidents appear to be caused by a combination of three possible factors – 1.unsafe equipment and/or installation, 2.workplaces made unsafe by the environment, and 3.unsafe work practices. There are various ways of protecting people from the hazards caused by electricity. These include: insulation, guarding, grounding, electrical protective devices, and safe work practices.

8 Eliminating Electrical Hazards è For safety reasons, the elimination of electrical hazards is the best way to deal with them wherever è possible. Ways to eliminate or control electrical hazards include: è Using a qualified person to carry out any electrical work è Following warning messages regarding the use of specific equipment such as a computer terminal è Reading relevant instructions or manuals before operating equipment è Turning off power before accessing electrical controls è Keeping electrical cords fixed unobtrusively and away from action areas è Informing an expert of any equipment faults.
