Working With Elephants Southern Asian forests are rich with a very special wood called teak which is hard and strong Very difficult to get teak out of the forest Teak is very heavy and could weigh up to two tons Elephants can use their trunk and tusks and lift and carry logs weighing up to 600 pounds Harvesting teak is a long process and can take two years Elephants can be trained to haul logs and stack in neat piles Mahouts (trainers) help the elephants permform these jobs The mahout takes care of the elephant by feeding, caring, bathing, singing, and talking Elephants do not begin their logging work until they are almost 20 years old Both male and female elephants are caught and trained Teak is used for making furniture, boat decks, indoor flooring, window frames, boats and one tree is dated as far back as 1500 years old
