3 Simile Simile – using like or as to compare two things Her hair is as soft as velvet. She was as skinny as a yardstick.

4 Metaphor Metaphor – comparing two things without using like or as Her hair is a silk ribbon. The baby girl is a beautiful angel.

5 Hyperbole Hyperbole – Using exaggeration to make a point She was so stuffed she thought she might explode. He was so hungry he could eat a cow.

6 Onomatopoiea Onomatopoiea – sound word The thunder made a low rumble. Tick tock, went the clock.

7 Alliteration Alliteration – repetition of beginning sound Susan slurped silly smoothies. Madeline made mats for Mary.

8 Personification Personification – giving human qualities to something not human The flowers danced in the breeze when I walked by. The spider winked at me when I came by.

9 Idiom Idiom – a well known expression that does not mean what it says A bird in a hand is worth two in a bush. Put a sock in it!
