1 What is Figurative Language? Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. What is Figurative Language? Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language.

2 Simile A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike. Example: busy as a bee

3 Metaphor The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison. A simile would say you are like something; a metaphor is more positive - it says you are something. Example: You are what you eat.

4 Personification A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object. Example: My teddy bear gave me a hug.

5 Alliteration The repetition of the same initial letter, sound, or group of sounds in a series of words. Alliteration includes tongue twisters. Example: She sells seashells by the seashore.

6 Onomatopoeia A word that “sounds” like the word it describes. Example: snap crackle pop

7 Hyperbole An exaggeration that is really unbelievable. Tall tales are hyperboles. Example: Because I was late, I had to fly to school.

8 Idioms A common phrase that is not literal. Example- I’m sweating bullets!

9  Either work by yourself or with up to 2 other people, choose an activity from the Choice Board.  You must present to the class on _________.  Your goal is to “teach” us about your Figurative Language.
