Three phases… Early Cubism (1907-1910) Analytical Cubism (1910-1912) Synthetic cubism (1912-1914)

Early/proto cubism Braque and Picasso A rejection of artistic traditions (conventions) such as how space or reality is implied…ie. One point perspective, atmospheric perspective, narrative, emotionally based subject matter, compositions that direct the viewers eye. Cezanne’s influence (sphere, cylinder, cone)

Conventions…. Atmospheric perspective… Caspar David Friedrich “wanderer above a sea of fog” German Romanticism

One point perspective…. Canelletto, 1740, “Grand Canal Venice”

Narrative… Leonardo da Vinci “Annunciation” 1472-75

Leading the eye composition…

Cubists rejected these, and other ideas…. WHY????? They wanted the painting to be a painting, not an illusion of reality, or a mimesis of nature, but a reality of its own.

Task…. Rejection of conventions… describe some of the conventions they rejected. Why do you think Picasso and Braque thought these conventions no longer relevant? (Context.. There WAS a time and a place for these things why did Picasso and Braque think it wasn’t in 1907?)
