3 What is an armistice? An armistice is a contract signed between countries to stop fighting. It ends hostilities between armies in time of war. For example: It’s a contract signed between Germany and the Allied nations for the peace in 1918.

4 What is it? November 11 th, is the birthday of the signing of the armistice of the World War I (1914-1918). This day, the United States thank all veterans of all wars.

5 Where was signed the armistice? After four years of war (1914-1918), the armistice was signed in France, in Compiegne, in the “Wagon de l’Armistice”.

6 Symbol in France In France, the symbol is a corn-flower. It is associated to the memory of those who made the World War I.

7 Creator of Veteran’s day In 1954, Veterans Service Organizations asked the US Congress to change the word “armistice” to “veteran”. On May 26 th, 1954, Dwight Eisenhower, the US President, signed the Act to confirm the change. The day officially becomes a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

9 Symbol in Commonwealth countries In Commonwealth countries the symbol is a poppy. It is associated to the memory of those who made war.

10 Other symbol in Commonwealth countries People wear white poppies not only to represent the soldiers dead during the wars, but also to honor the peace in all countries.
