19 The Problem of Land Poor farmers wanted land of their own Wanted to break up giant haciendas and give each family a few acres. The land of the haciendas once belonged to the village farmers. A law passed in 1883 made it easy for rich ranch owners to take the land of villages to form haciendas.

23 The End On April 10, 1919, Zapata was tricked into a meeting with one of Carranza's generals who wanted to "switch sides." The meeting was a trap, and Zapata was killed as he arrived at the meeting.
