14 Who were the “Zapatistas” Where were they located Why were they angry? What did they do? How did this conflict change things in Mexico? Mexican Citizens of Native American (Mayan) Descent FARMERS Chiapas, Mexico (In the south along the border w/ Guatemala & Belize →Wanted Private Land Ownership →Disagreed w/ NAFTA b/c they thought it would lower the price of their crops & they would lose money Seized control of 4 towns in Chiapas & fought govt. troops until a cease-fire was agreed upon. -Improvement in housing & education for Mayan farmers in Chiapas -Land Ownership laws were changed -New laws made sure those of Native descent served in the legislature of Mexico
