3 Classification 1 There are five different groups of animals with vertebrates.  Mammals  Fish  Reptiles  Birds  Amphibians

4 Classification 2  The Eastern Water Dragon is classified as a reptile because it’s cold blooded.  The Eastern Water Dragon has scales.  The Eastern Water Dragon also lungs.

5 Eastern Water Dragon  The Eastern Water Dragon is classified as a reptile because they lay eggs.  They have loose folds of skin under their mouth.  Their legs are long and very strong.  The tail is strong and flattened on the sides to help with swimming.

6 Adaptation - Camouflage  Since the Eastern Water Dragon is prey, it has to camouflage itself.  Its upper body is gray-green so it can hide itself in bushes.  The eyes of the Water Dragon are shaped like berries – ooh, so cool!  The folds of skin on its neck look like leaves!

7 Adaptation – Habitat  The Eastern Water Dragon is found along the east coast of Australia.  It is normally found around creeks, rivers, or lakes.  This lizard likes to sit on branches overhanging over the water. If it is disturbed it just jumps in the water from the branch.

8 Behavior- Social Habits 1  It feeds on some bugs, frogs and fruits.  Males make homes that protect the eggs.  The females lay about a dozen eggs in a hole.  Males sometimes fight for territories.

9 Behavior- Social Habits 2  In the wild, the Water Dragon usually live in wooded or bushy places.  The females dig holes in sandy banks to lay their eggs.  Baby Eastern Water Dragons are able to fight for themselves almost as soon as they’re born.

10 Interesting Facts  They have big, large heads and large, compressed bodies and tails.  There is a row of spines starting on the back of their head and leading down along their back-cool!  The lizard can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes and rise to the surface, where it can breathe while checking the area for danger before going back on land.
