1. James Monroe Monroe was born in Virginia in 1758 and he died in 1831. Monroe was the fifth president of the United States, serving as president from 1817 to 1825.

Foreign Policy James Monroe followed the foreign policy that George Washington recommended in his “Farewell Address” in 1796. –Washington urged (advised, warned) America to stay out of European affairs and not take sides with European countries, that is, to remain neutral. 8. Supported Independence of Latin American Countries James Monroe did not want the European countries to send armies to help Spain re- gain its colonies that had achieved independence. Monroe also wanted the European countries to stop trying to make colonies in the Western Hemisphere.

9. Actions that James Monroe did: In 1822 Monroe recognized the independence of many Latin American countries. In 1823 Monroe announced the Monroe Doctrine stating that the U.S. wanted to keep the European Countries out of the Americas. “The U.S. says, ‘Yes’ to Mexico’s Independence! ” “We will protect the free Latin American Countries from the European Nations and their armies!”

10. The Monroe Doctrine said: The U.S. would try to stop (oppose) any attempt by European countries to establish new colonies in the Americas (Western Hemisphere). The U.S. would try to stop (oppose) any European country that wanted to re-conquer a country that gained independence. Monroe said that the U.S. would not interfere in colonies that were still under European rule, like Cuba and Canada. “No new Colonies” American Countries, north and south, will stay free!
