Instructions for Endnote Mary Biathrow, Academic Coordinator Tuck School of Business

Endnote Is an on-line search tool. It provides an easy way to search online bibliographic databases and import them directly to an endnote “library.” A bibliography and manuscript maker, using the “cite while you write feature.”

How Endnote works: Under file select new, name and save it. Under tools, select “on-line search” Web of Science (for Journals) WorldCat (for Books, Chapters) In the search form, put in author’s name, article title, year published, journal name (must have at least author name and year of publication.)

How Endnote works (cont.): References will be imported from an on- line db, select the citation you want and import it into the library that you created. Sometimes there are multiple citations with the same author and year, so look carefully at the full citation before importing it to your library.

Output styles: Depending on which journal the article will be submitted to, you can select from a list of journal styles (journal styles are located in the window to the right of the menu screen). You can edit an output style by going to edit on the menu bar, selecting "output styles" at the top of the first section and then choose, edit “Journal name.” A box will open with a template of the style you are working on and you can change it by simply editing and saving. Suggestion: save as, “the style name.revised.” Then the original style will remain unchanged.

New to Endnote X1 Now you can preview your citation libraries, in endnote. Click on one citation in your library and then under “Edit” choose “select all.” When the entire library is highlighted choose the “print preview” option under “File.” The bib will be displayed in the journal output style you have selected. You can also print the document from the “print preview” screen

New to Endnote X1 (cont’d) Other upgrades to endnote include: Headings in the library db for journal, ref. type, and URL; with the information shown under the headings. Under tools instead of “connect to” you will see “on-line search.” When using the on-line search tool, instead of having to close it each time to search for a new citation, you can simply clear the sheet and return to search.

Creating a bibliography Here are a couple of ways bibliographies are created in Endnote 1. Export library to create bibliography Go to file, select export Save document as a rich text file. 2. Cite as you write in a manuscript Bibliography will automatically appear when citations are inserted in the text of the manuscript.

Importing citations from a word document to an Endnote library It is possible to import a bibliography, created in a word document, to an Endnote library. It involves setting up the document in this format: 1. Type a heading for each category of the citation, tab between each heading. 2. Then tab in between each category in the citation. Place a slash (/) mark between multiple author names.

Importing citations from a word document to an Endnote library (cont.) The document will look like this : *Journal Article AuthorYearTitleJournalVolumeIssuePages Astley W,//Vandeven A.1983.Central perspectives and debates in organization theory.Administrative Science Quarterly28(2):245-273. Create separate files for different categories such as: books, book chapters, etc.

Importing citations from a word document to an Endnote library (cont.) When the document has been formatted, as mentioned in the previous slide, save it as a text file. Go to your endnote library open import (under the file menu) it will bring you to a box that asks you to find what you want to import. It should be set on tab delimited and then click import. All citation will be imported to your library.
