4 How can we recognise Industry? Large grey buildings Next to river or railway lines Brown/grey spaces

5 How can we recognise terraced Housing? Straight roads Houses all connected Very small garden

6 How can we recognise inter-war housing? Semi-detached housing Larger back gardens Small front gardens

7 How can we recognise modern housing? Small cul-de- sac roads (dead ends!) Large detached houses Open spaces and large gardens

8 Your Task: Colour code your Base map as follows: River/waterLight Blue Central Business DistrictPurple IndustryBrown Old/terraced housingYellow Inter war/semi detachedOrange Modern/detachedRed Use the Ordnance Survey Map or Computer to search the areas of Southampton shown on your base map. Identify the MAIN land use in each area:
