2 Why use reading strategies? Good readers have a number of tricks in their bag to help them understand a text. Strategies help the reader process what has been read. Readers can relate to the text. Reading strategies can be used before, during and after the reading.

3 Reading Strategies Make predictions Visualize Ask and answer questions Retell and summarize Connect text to personal experiences or other texts

4 Making predictions Think about what is going to happen next or what the story or text will be about. Create an interest for the text. Good strategy for before and during the reading.

5 Visualize Imagine the time, place and characters. Plot the events on a web or story outline. Draw pictures of scenes or how the character appears in your mind.

6 Ask and answer questions Make notes on sticky pads. – Why did the character do this? – What caused this event to happen in history? – How did the character get in this situation? Respond to your questions as you come across the answers. If you can, underline unfamiliar words.

7 Retell and summarize Summarize chapters of long text or novels. Keep a journal for books that you read.

8 Activate prior knowledge What do you already know about the topic? Can you relate to something that has happened to a character? – Lost homework – Late for work – Busy parents Builds interest in the story Makes a personal connection
