Tonyrefail School Science Dept Behaviour Management Resource –Gavin Rees This is a presentation that was given by myself to the science dept after completing the pivotal online behaviour management course. It includes: class rules, stages of behaviour management, rewards and some useful strategies.

RESPECT!! (Some rules to be respectful) 1.Treat others in the same way that you want to be treated and do not swear in class. 2.Quiet when teachers or pupils are speaking. 3.Do not be verbally or physically abusive in class. 4.Always listen and work to the best of your ability. 5.If you are stuck or want to say something put up your hand. 6.Wear the appropriate uniform in class, bring appropriate equipment and your planner to class. 7.Be punctual. 8.If you break the rules, accept the consequences!!

Stages Of Managing Your Behaviour  If you listen to the rules there will NEVER be a problem, but if the rules are broken the following stages will be implemented: 1.3 Strikes –you will be given a request a maximum of 3 times. 2.If the request is not met, then you will stand up to think about what must be done. 3.If the request is still not met, you will have a private chat to resolve the issue and you will be moved to stay out of trouble. 4.If the request is still not met, OR a more serious rule break occurs you will be parked in a different class AND receive a lunch/break detention. 5.If you do not attend this, you will receive a Science after school detention. 6.If you are late, you will owe the time back at lunch or break.

Rewards 1.Praise from me, verbal or written. 2.Merit points 3.Letters home. 4.Good results.

Some strategies to deal with behavioural issues: 1.Deal or no deal. 2.Picture rules 3.Late Corner

Deal Or No Deal?  This is a useful resource for students who provide little or no work during a lesson. The aim is as follows; 1.Set a high target e.g. Answer all 10 Questions! 2.The pupil response might be; “I’m not doing it!” 3.The follow up response from the teacher is to “make a deal” with the pupil that is close to the target the teacher requires, but also allows the pupil to feel that they have some ownership of the deal. E.g. “Ok lets make a deal; if you can answer 6 questions by 10 minutes before the end of the lesson, then I will give you that time to do your own thing. Is that a deal?” 4.You need to keep in mind that you probably would have had no work from this pupil but, the lesson will end with at least half of the work done!

Late Corner  You’re late! Stand here and read the rules of what needs to be done when you are told to take your seat: 1.Finish all the lesson’s work by the end of the lesson- only 5 minutes reflection time at break. Well done on sorting it out! 2.Work not completed! Come back break time! The quicker the work gets finished, the sooner you will leave. 3.Failure to attend break catch up! You will get an after school 30 minute science detention. Bad choice!!!
