Learning objectives: I will be able to define the characteristics of a mineral I will be able to examine actual minerals and perform identification tests to identify the mineral I will be able to describe the physical and chemical properties of minerals

3 Agenda Warm-Up: Anticipation Guide (5 minutes) will be taped on page 31 Vocabulary (page 29) View quizlet: https://quizlet.com/_1haqdnhttps://quizlet.com/_1haqdn Stations Station (Introduction): Quizlet Station 1: Introduction to Minerals; you tube video, reading material, questions and graphic organizer) Station 2: Identifying Minerals; you tube video, graphic organizer, reading material, questions Station 3: Being a Mineralogist students will examine 7 mineral samples and identify them by their properties Station 4: Virtual Rock and Mineral Lab students will visit website and complete mineral identification tests virtually while completing questions Station 5: Glencoe mineral investigation-using the identification process students will identify 5 minerals and their properties

4 Vocabulary Mineral: naturally occurring solid with a definite composition and crystalline structure. Composition: to be made of; the act of combining parts to make a whole Renewable: ability to be made again in a short period of time Non renewable: not able to be made again in a short period of time Natural resource: resource that is not made by humans but made by nature.

5 Station: Introduction to lesson To help build your knowledge to prepare you for the other stations you will visit the following vocabulary website and work on the vocabulary words. https://quizlet.com/_1haqdn You will also complete Brain Pop mineral identification and complete the two worksheets and quiz that goes along with it. Teacher will be at this station to assist you Once you have became familiar with the vocabulary words by using the flash cards, speller and then Learn. You will then choose one of the games to complete. Must show the teacher the results before moving to station 1

6 Station 1: Introduction to Minerals 1. You will view the video titled “Brief introduction to minerals” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a7p1NFn64s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a7p1NFn64s 2. Complete the graphic organizer. When you write the 5 characteristics. (One characteristic in each box) make sure to explain what it means Ex: solid is one of the characteristics. Write solid in one of the boxes and then beneath solid in the same box write what does it mean to be solid. Complete the questions in your ISN on page 30. You do not have to write the question but answer in complete sentences by restating the question. EX: 1. When looking closely at the rock granite I can see…… Must complete exit slip to move to next station given to you by teacher. Must past with 80%

7 Station 2: Identifying Mineral You will view the video and complete the graphic organizer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32NG9aeZ7_c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32NG9aeZ7_c After you have completed the graphic organizer and the video you will answer the “EXPLORE MORE” questions 1-7. Then you will answer the REVIEW questions. 1-3. In your ISN on page 31. You will answer the questions in complete sentences. This means restate the question and then answer. EX: 1. Two reasons why color is not a good way to identify minerals is because …… Must complete exit ticket to move to next station. Will be given to you by teacher. Must past with 80%

8 Station 3: Being a Mineralogist At this station you will see 7 different minerals along with a streak plate, a penny, and glass. You will also use your fingernail. As you examine each sample You will view each of the sample minerals and complete your chart. Once you are finished your chart, you will view images of the minerals and based on your observations, determine the name of the each sample.

9 Station 5: Virtual lab for Minerals and Rocks At this station you will use technology (computers). You will pick use the packet at the station to go to the website: Virtual Rock Lab Interactivity. You will complete the assignment by reading the directions and then completing the expected task. YOU MUST READ!!!!!!

10 Station 4: You will visit the following website http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/ES03 /ES03.swf (you can type Glencoe virtual lab in google) http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/ES03 /ES03.swf Read the directions and using your graphic organizer you will go through the steps of identifying 5 minerals and place the information on your sheet. For the questions 1-4 answer in your ISN on page

11 SUMMARY Shape up Review: You will receive four shapes that you will place in your ISN. You will choose 2 shapes and complete the following task for the shape chosen. What did you love learning today Write one sentence summarizing what you learned today Write four important facts about todays lesson you learned Write three important facts about today’s lesson you learned

12 September 17, 2015 Come in and sign on to the computer. Start at the same station you ended on Tuesday. You will need to complete all 3 stations today. The first 5 students to complete all 3 stations will receive a TREAT……. Remember: you must take a quiz and get it checked (must have make an 80% or higher) in order to move to the next station. All stations will be graded.
