3 Information for Parents The computer should always be in an open area, not in a child’s room. Use filtering software designed to help you limit the websites your child can access. Remind your children you are using software to track their online activity. Talk to your child about why it is not OK to bully other children online or in person. Remind your children that people who introduce themselves on the Internet are often not who they say they are. Instruct your child to never give out personal information online, including their full name, gender, age, school, address, or team. Home

4 Information For Kids Make sure a parent, teacher, or guardian knows when you are surfing the net. Don’t give out any personal information online. This includes your real name, your friend’s names, your home, school or e-mail adress. Never arrange to meet anyone you met online. Ask for an adults permission before registering for an websites. Don’t’ give out any passwords. Don’t open emails for people you do not know. Never agree to a private chat unless you know them in real life. Home

5 Information for Educators Advise students to exit any site that make them feel uncomfortable or worried. Tell students to come see you if they ever encounter any inappropriate material on the Internet. Make sure your students understand that they will not get in trouble if they tell you about a problem. Model the appropriate way to use the Internet. Teach students that information on the internet is not always reliable. Never let students “google” aimlessly without supervision. Home

6 What is Internet Safety? Home Internet safety, sometimes referred to as digital safety, on-line safety or cyber safety, is a relatively new concept that has grown with advances in the Internet. There are many aspects to Internet safety. Broadly, the term refers to practices and precautions you should observe when using the Internet, so as to ensure that your personal information, computer, and self remain safe.
