Backup is one of the oldest and most frequently performed IT processes, but 50% of customers are not satisfied (According to ESG 2015), They are looking at solutions that provide help with data growth, cloud, snapshots and their media choices.
Data growth is still a big concern for customers. How to they manage and protect data that is growing in some cases 60% per year.
Cloud – Two of the top three reasons to go to the cloud are are backup and disaster recovery applications. The cloud is expected to be a backup destination for 24% of enterprises by 2017, up from 12% today.
Snapshots – Most daily backups are being augmented or replaced by frequent snapshots to disk to reduce recovery time objectives and mitigate the risk of data loss. By 2016, 20% of organizations will deploy only snapshots for backup.
Media – Customers are looking for the flexibility found in disk based backup, but they still need to tape to reduce costs and archive data for long term. Disk based remote replication eliminates the manual tape handling process. Alternatively, We are seeing tape for archive growing 35% between and tape in the cloud is becoming an attractive solutions for long term stooge and costs reduction (Spectrum Archive is an example).

Cost is always an issue especially when dealing with backup copies of data or archives.
Capability – Image 3 years down the road with the same environment you have today. If you aren't taking advantage leading edge technologies, newer capabilities like cloud you can make your backup windows and SLAs and you won’t be stuck with an expensive and inflexible infrastructure (Butterfly study can prove how much money you can save 3 years down the road).
complexity – If you add multiple vendor storage and software products your environment will inherently get more complex. With complexity you need more people and you cant respond quickly to downtime or to handle a new project.
Completeness – how can you satisfy todays and future needs. Do you have an enterprise class solution that will scale no matter what size environment, how robust are your functions? Will you have to replace it down the road? Symantec backup exec customers ran into this, they couldn't’t uplift to the enterprise product
Customer support – you want an organization that has great support. Customer satisfaction is related to how well they are treated.

Business Pressures: 2-3 years down the road as data grows, SLAs increase, backup windows shrink and costs increase the need for a solutions that will provide key technologies, scale all while reducing TCO is critical to staying competitive. Protect can provide savings of 53% over the competition.

-From an architectural stand point. Protect is a two tier client server architecture, unlike our competitors who have a 3 tier architecture. This architecture allows us to save over 50% in total costs over the competition
-On the left we have the Protect client which can be application servers, database servers, file servers, or laptops. We install an agent on those machines(or in case of VMs on a proxy) to communicate to Protect over LAN, WAN OR SAN.
-Protect is designed around restore accuracy, restore speeds and recoverability of data. You will see reliability in everything we do.
Off to the right is the Protect server infrastructure and it’s database and storage pool hierarchy. Flexible Deduplication - Scalability, are you paying more for deduplication? (For Data Domain customers it is a clear yes). A single Protect server can deduplicate 4PB of Data with a single server and clients can deduplicate 100TB of nightly changed data. . Not only can we deduplicate at the server we can deduplicate at the client and the replication target. Sending data deduplicated from the client across geographies This is very high performing and eliminates the need for VTLs or deduplication appliances. We have the ability to do this with SoftLayer and soon we will connect to public cloud vendors like Amazon and Microsoft's storage in the cloud using it will use open stack interfaces. We do not need to use hardware gateways for our hybrid cloud the API is integrated into Spectrum Protect (at no additional charge).
