3 Virginia Pocahontas John Rolfe
After saving John Smith's life, she helped bring food to the starving English colonists Helped bring peace between the English colonists and the Indians after being captured by the colonists and marrying John Rolfe. Showed England that not all 'Indians' were savages as many of them thought John Rolfe credited with the first successful cultivation of tobacco as an export crop in the Colony of Virginia

4 Georgia James Oglethorpe
James Edward Oglethorpe was a founder of the colony of Georgia. As a social reformer, he hoped to resettle Britain's poor, especially those in debtors' prisons, in the New World

5 Maryland Lord Baltimore
When Cecil Calvert, second Lord Baltimore, created the colony of Maryland, he formed it based on the ideas of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Maryland, in fact, became known as a haven for Roman Catholics in the New World.

6 Pennsylvania William Penn
William Penn founded Pennsylvania. Eventually, Delaware would break off from it. Penn believed in religious toleration Pennsylvania had many of the rights and liberties that would later be granted the citizens of the United States through its constitution.

7 Pilgrims In September people set sail for the Americas in hopes of finding religious freedom Their intended destination was a region near the Hudson River, which at the time was thought to be part of the already established colony of Virginia.

8 Pilgrims Rough seas and storms prevented the Mayflower from reaching their initial destination, and after a voyage of 65 days the ship reached the shores of Cape Cod, anchoring on the site of Provincetown Harbor in mid-November. After sending an exploring party ashore, the Mayflower landed at what they would call Plymouth Harbor, on the western side of Cape Cod Bay, in mid-December. More than half of the English settlers died during that first winter, as a result of poor nutrition and housing that proved inadequate in the harsh weather.

9 Puritans In 1629, Puritans founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston. The Puritan colony grew quickly and soon became the economic and religious center of Massachusetts. Unlike the Pilgrims, who came to Massachusetts for religious freedom, the Puritans came for religious purification, and were intolerant of other religious groups.

10 Quakers Quakers did not believe in the strict rules imposed by the Puritan church. They believed that people could have a direct relation with God, rather than one directed by a minister.
