2 nd Grade How does the blood carry oxygen and nutrients through the body? What effect does exercise have on the heart and lungs? 26/22/2015© Austin Independent School District

Cardiovascular System- system of heart and blood vessels working together Heart- pumps the blood throughout the body Lungs- helps you breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide Oxygen- a gas that you inhale that the blood takes from the lungs http://hsc.uwe.ac.uk/rcp/Images/heartLungs.jpg 6/22/2015© Austin Independent School District3

Carbon Dioxide- a gas that the blood brings from the body to the lungs for you to exhale Arteries- carries blood away from the heart Veins- carries blood toward the heart Asthma- a condition that keeps people from breathing well Nutrients- food solution carried by the blood to the body http://blog.heart.org/vacationing-heart-healthy/ 6/22/2015© Austin Independent School District4

The heart is located in the middle of the body. It is about the size of your fist. 5 THE HEART http://www.wiltonlibrary.org/uploads/heart.gif http://www.modernhearthealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/heart-beat.jpg 6/22/2015© Austin Independent School District

The heart pumps blood all over the body. When you exercise, the heart beats faster to pump blood to the muscles. When you sleep, the heart slows down. This is so the heart and body can rest. 6 THE HEART http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/human-heart-lungs-10674263.jpg 6/22/2015© Austin Independent School District
