1 Cardio 2nd Grade TEKS Identify how regular physical activity strengthens the heart, lungs, and muscular system. (2.4A) Describe how the blood carries oxygen and nutrients through the body. (2.4B)

2 How does the blood carry oxygen and nutrients through the body?
2nd Grade How does the blood carry oxygen and nutrients through the body? What effect does exercise have on the heart and lungs? Add TEKS (in a box) to each slide 2

3 Heart- pumps the blood throughout the body
Cardiovascular System- system of heart and blood vessels working together Heart- pumps the blood throughout the body Lungs- helps you breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide Oxygen- a gas that you inhale that the blood takes from the lungs 2

4 Arteries- carries blood away from the heart
Carbon Dioxide- a gas that the blood brings from the body to the lungs for you to exhale Arteries- carries blood away from the heart Veins- carries blood toward the heart Asthma- a condition that keeps people from breathing well Nutrients- food solution carried by the blood to the body 2

5 THE HEART Picture of car and getting gas The heart is located in the middle of the body. It is about the size of your fist. 2

6 THE HEART The heart pumps blood all over the body. When you exercise, the heart beats faster to pump blood to the muscles. When you sleep, the heart slows down. This is so the heart and body can rest. 2

7 The lungs are on each side of the heart. They help you breathe.
Show pictures of healthy food The lungs are on each side of the heart. They help you breathe. 2

8 The heart and lungs work together and are protected by the ribs
The heart and lungs work together and are protected by the ribs. When you exercise, the lungs and heart work faster to deliver oxygen to your muscles. 2

9 The lungs breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.
2

10 The heart pumps blood. The blood picks up oxygen from the lungs and delivers oxygen throughout the body. Blood with oxygen Blood without oxygen 2

11 Where does the blood travel after it leaves the lungs?
Heart Let’s follow the blood through the heart! Click here 2 Teacher Note: Roll mouse over image in link to see names and functions of heart and lungs. Then click start to see power point and press next to advance slides.

12 The blood picks up nutrients from the digestive system
The blood picks up nutrients from the digestive system. It delivers the nutrients on its route through the body. 2

13 Asthma Asthma is a condition that keeps people from breathing well. It is not contagious so you can not catch it from someone that has it. When someone has asthma, they can have an asthma attack when they exercise. An inhaler can be used to help them breathe easier. Inhaler 2

14 Benefits of Physical Activity
It is important to participate in activities that increase your heart rate to keep your body healthy. When your body is healthy, you can play longer. Teacher note: Define “benefits” if needed. “Benefit”= something that helps you 2

15 Cardiovascular Review
Which picture shows the heart? Do jumping jacks if you think this is the picture of the heart. Do crab kicks if you think this is the picture of the heart. Students should jog in place. 2

16 Cardiovascular Review
Game Time! Read the question then decide how to answer the question. Show your answer by performing the skill listed with the correct answer. Students should jog in place, 2

17 What does your blood pick up in the lungs?
Food = V-sit Muscles = Frog Jumps Oxygen = Push ups Students should jog in place, 2

18 Oxygen = Push ups

19 What does the blood bring back through the heart to the lungs to be exhaled?
Carbon Dioxide = V-sit Muscles = Frog jumps Nutrients = Push ups 2

20 Carbon Dioxide = V-sit Oxygen = Push ups
