1 Welcome to the 4 th grade! 2014-2015

2 A Few Things About Ms. Camit  Graduated from UH Manoa.  4 th year at St. Mark  Looking forward to an exciting year!

3 Teaching Goals and Philosophy  Create a classroom ‘Ohana  Develop students mind and soul  Encourage students to be positive contributors

4 Studies and Curriculum  Formal and informal assessments  Hands on learning through quarterly projects, games, experiments, activities, etc…  Tests and Quizzes  Participation and Effort

5 Homework Policy  Monday – Friday night  60 – 90 minutes  Reading, Language Arts, Math, Religion, and Other  Planners need to be signed nightly.  Quarterly Projects: - A little every night - Minimal parent involvement  If a homework assignment is incomplete or missing a slip will be sent home that needs to be signed by parents.

6 Accelerated Reader  Reading program that tracks books read  Points are earned through quizzes  You will be able to access student accounts at home to check on points earned and to look up books to see if there is an AR quiz available and how much points possible.  Your student will not be able to take quizzes at home.

7 Absences When to stay home Fever, Vomiting, Anything Contagious Excessive absences may result in inability to make up assignments. Missed Work Request by 10 am Work ready after 12 pm Parents pick up at office or given to sibling if present

8 Behavior Policy  GOAL: To instill responsibility in your children, not to punish them.  Students start on green. If they move down they always have the opportunity to move back up by the end of the day.

9 Parent Communication  Check your child’s Homework binder every night for important information and completed/graded assignments.  Return any forms within 1-2 days.

10 4 th grade Website  The website has weekly homework, monthly 4YI, announcements, etc…  NewsFlash sign-up: Important announcements and reminders will be sent to your email or phone. http://www.smls-hawaii.org/

11 Gradelink  This is a very important tool to stay on top of your child’s academic progress in school.  Log on to view your child’s grades.  Set up settings to get email alerts about grades when they get put in.

19 May Day Help  Setting up and cleaning program  Flowers and greenery  Parking  Teaching Dance

20 Parent Helpers Classroom Helpers  Prepare materials  Collect supplies for experiments or other activities  Help plan and organize any class parties

21 Parent Helpers Learning Trip chaperones  Help keep students on task during Learning Trips  Drivers are a HUGE help. If we are unable to get enough drivers for a trip we will either have to cancel or get a bus ($$$).  Some places we hope to visit this year… Bishop Museum, Haunama Bay, etc…

22 Big Island Parent Helpers Fundraising Committee  1 Head of Committee to communicate with Ms. Camit  Committee members plan and organize events  Non members can still contribute  $ percentage based on participation and donation  You can pay the full cost if you do not want to participate in fundraising.

23 Big Island Fundraising Events  Fall Family Night: Concession stand Sept. 11  Optional:  2 Dinner plate events: Oct. and Jan. Students sell pre-sale tickets. Pick up late afternoon at the school.  McDonalds Night  Monthly Morning Snack Stand

24 Big Island Parent Helpers Trip Chaperones  Pay your own expenses  Responsible for group 24 hours!  Responsible for 3 students  Father = Son  Mother = Daughter  Final choices made by the end of January

25 Big Island Trip  Wednesday May 11 – Friday May 13  Hilo and Kona  Planning and itinerary modeling previous successful trips  More information as the year progresses
