TDA 3M - ARCHITECTURE SUMMATIVE THEMES - OVERVIEW SUMMATIVE 2012

A.OBJECTIVES The following design problem has been developed to test and evaluate the problem‑solving skills of Technological Design - Architectural students. Some expectations and outcomes of the project are: 1. The proposal will emphasize the following:  research and information gathering  analysis of residential space  design programming  efficient design space use  costing vs. design  Designing process : Form vs. Function

2. To show evidence of research, documentation and presentation skills, such as;  Interpolation of human space requirements  presentation drawing skills  computer assisted drawing skills  collaborative design discussions  interpolation of Commercial Ontario Building Code – 2006 – Part 3 Division B or Part 9 : Housing

 You should keep in mind that this is a sketch problem which is to be solved within a limited period of time.  Allocate your time accordingly  Refer to the Rubrics and Project Parameters/Documentation Requirements

OVERVIEW - STATEMENT OF THE DESIGN PROBLEM  You own a piece of land on a lakeshore near Huntsville.  budgetary allowance of $150,000 for the cottage and deck.  Other funds are budgeted for landscaping and road access, but these items are not part of your design proposal.  construction costs, which are based on the floor area of the dwelling (floor area dependant upon costs outlined). ◦ $125 SF BUILDING ◦ $20.00 SF DECK  You must not exceed this cost allowance in your design and you must state the individual cost allocations and the total cost of the building on your drawings.  Describe the “Social Economic Demographic”

OVERVIEW - STATEMENT OF THE DESIGN PROBLEM|  Design a two car detached garage with a room above for storage.  The access to the second storey may be by an interior or exterior stair.  The client would like to have presentation drawings and either a: ◦ detailed structural model (no exterior finish) OR ◦ CAD 3D rendering of your garage design with a detailed Massing Exterior Model

Required: 1. Design Program – Design Brief 2. Preliminary Concept Sketch – Sketch Plan Floor Plan 3. Final Computer Generated Plan i) Detailed Massing Model – Structural ii) CAD/Google 3D + Massing Model – Exterior Sketch Log (8.5 x 11) format

OVERVIEW - STATEMENT OF THE DESIGN PROBLEM  You have been asked to design a condominium SALES OFFICE and a luxury ONE BEDROOM MODEL that has a combined total of 3,548 square feet/330 square meters of interior space. EXISTING  The ‘ EXISTING ’ complex is situated on the south shore of a large salt water bay with all one hundred and sixty units having a bay view to the north.  The project will include all the amenities for resort living including a concierge, central valet and laundry services, club house, pools, whirlpools, saunas, gymnasiums, tennis courts, bike paths, etc.

OVERVIEW - STATEMENT OF THE DESIGN PROBLEM  ONE BEDROOM MODEL.  The model is intended to function as a sales tool used to illustrate ◦ a typical layout, ◦ standard interior finishes, and ◦ potential furnishing options while projecting a casual but elegant environment.

Required: 1. Design Program – Design Brief 2. Preliminary Concept Sketch – Sketch Plan Floor Plan 3. Final Computer Generated Plan 4. Detailed Massing Model – Reception Area - or – Google Sketchup 3D Rendering 5. Sketch Log (8.5 x 11) format Documentation : SALES OFFICE

 The following design problem is a ◦ Final Summative Evaluation that will be ◦ weighted at 30% of the term mark ◦ problem and brief will be submitted in it’s final ’printed and plotted’ form on 8.5 x 11 paper as per Design Brief, ◦ CAD and ECI outline standards. ◦ The plotted design problem is due on Thursday January 24th. ◦ Late submissions up to one day will be penalized at 10% per day, up to 30%. ◦ No submissions will be accepted after Friday January 25 th.

 Complete and Hand in the Summative Review  Read and Review each Design Proposal Theme  Be sure to know your limits in terms of time and effort for this 30% Exit Question  Select ONE theme – Complete Exit Question  Submit Design Brief – Shed Challenge  Begin Design Brief for Design Proposal
