4 Work, Project and Portfolio Management
Microsoft Lync 4/26/2017 Work, Project and Portfolio Management Portfolio Management PMO/Executives Project Management Project Teams Work Management Adhoc Teams Good after noon. We are right after the lunch, so I will try to be a bit more alive. First of all we have to admit one thing: PM is not anymore what is used to be 5 or 10 or 15 years back. For example in Microsoft - in the delivery side - we do have Project Managers but we also have Engagement Managers. And we do this because we understand we perceive that we its about managing the relationship. So I would say that PM spans in both dimensions. Inside every project ( or engagement) And as the slide points out horizontally, we no longer manage one project, but we have to manage a set of projects, a project portfolio. Key concept: Our long-term vision is to offer industry leading Work, Project & Portfolio management solution for the cloud-first and mobile-first world. Talking Points: Through Office 365 we are providing a solution for all your work needs. Broadly, we think of this space along two dimensions – how you work and the level of complexity of the things you’re working on. These two dimensions help guide our customers to choose the tools they need to get work done. You could be working by yourself, or within a ad-hoc team. For example for this presentation you can imagine that a small group of us came together – the account manager, solution specialist and maybe a couple of local marketing team members. Similarly, you could also be working on a more structured Project team led by a Project Manager or you could be a part of a PMO. Task Management. Task management is about working on a set of tasks on your own. For this scenario, you can use simple tools such as Outlook, OneNote or sticky notes etc., Work Management. For the ad-hoc teams I spoke about – we offer some capabilities in SharePoint such as Task Lists, some teams also use Excel for this. We see a trend towards more & more work getting accomplished in such settings and will release a formal solution targeted at this scenario later this year. [Note: If the customer is interested in learning more about Work Management, please use the deck posted here - Project & Portfolio Management. For Project teams, PMO and Executives, we offer Project and Portfolio Management tools. Portfolio Management is becoming more important as organizations face tight budgets and more projects. In many cases, people perform these roles without necessarily having the title of “Portfolio Manager” (e.g. at Microsoft, we see Project desktop, Project Server, and Project Online as a portfolio and use Portfolio Optimization to decide on the future investments). This exercise typically involves Marketing, Program Management, Dev, and Test leaders, and nobody on our team has Portfolio Manager as their title. PPM is a big priority for us as Microsoft. We take pride in having the largest market share in this space and will continue to invest aggressively. Based on our interactions with customers, the team member persona has similar (if not same) needs across different types of projects. Long-term, we plan to deliver a consistent experience for team members, to help manage their tasks, irrespective of whether they are working on adhoc projects on enterprise projects. For remainder of this discussion, we will talk about our PPM solution. Task Management Individuals Low Medium High Level of Complexity © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
