2 How it Started… Tim Horton and Jim Charade attempted and failed in opening a hamburger business. Decided to try again with a coffee shop. The first Tim Horton’s Doughnuts was opened- serving only coffee and doughnuts- in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964. Ron Joyce partnered with Tim Horton in 1967 as Jim Charade would soon leave the business. 3 With Joyce’s help, two more shops were opened by 1967.
Joyce and Horton became full partners until Horton’s death in a car crash in 1974, when Joyce took full ownership. Tom Horton’s Doughnuts quickly overtook McDonalds in Canada and soon became a multi-million dollar franchise.

4 Product Line… Joyce realized for the franchise to grow he needed to diversify the product line. Originally served coffee and doughnuts. Current Menu: Coffee, Steeped Tea, Specialty Tea, Hot Chocolate, Iced Cappuccino and soft drinks, Juices, Milk and Water. Variety of bagels, croissants, muffins, cookies and donuts, sandwiches and soup varieties Fruit, yogurt, hash browns, and variety of breakfast sandwiches .

5 Merge with Wendy’s In 1992, Tim Hortons made a vertical merger with Wendy’s. Joyce became largest shareholder in Wendy’s until he later retired to pursue other interests. Through death and retirement of original entepreneurs, Tim Hortons has still been a huge success. Had been a privately owned business until 2009 (mainly for tax purposes). Is now a public business.

6 Further Expansion… New Expansion Plan announced in March 2010:
Tim Hortons locations have recently opened in Tops Markets stores and in New York City. The chain is most successful across Canada and in the North Eastern United States, but is gaining popularity across the U.S. and in other nations. New Expansion Plan announced in March 2010: 600 new stores in Canada 300 in U.S. Extend co-branding with Cold Stone Creamery (began in 2009) More menu choices

7 In the Community… Tim Hortons Childrens Foundation:
Sends underpriviledged children from U.S. and Canada to one of 6 summer camps. Camp Day: all proceeds on this day go to fund the camps.

8 Roll up the Rim to Win Most successful promotion
Customers roll up rim of cups and reveal if they have won a prize Prizes include cash, Toyota Rav4, Toshiba Netbooks, Tim Hortons gift cards and a variety of food prizes

9 Tim Hortons Today… Holds 22% of Canadian fast food industry, 76% market for baked goods and 62% of the coffee market. 3527 locations worldwide as of September 2009: 2971 in Canada and 556 in the U.S. Became a multinational corporation with locations spreading in UK and Ireland, also a restaurant on a military base outside Kandahar, Afghanistan.
