30 Peer Pressure Definition of a peer:  People your age or grade Definition of peer pressure:  Influence people your age have on you Examples of positive and negative peer pressure

32 Resistance Skills Definition of resistance skills: help you resist pressure to make a wrong decision Ways to use resistance skills:  Look at the person. Say “no” in a firm voice  Give reasons for saying “no”  Match your behavior to your words  Ask an adult for help if you need it

33 Stress What is stress:  Response to any demand or your mind or body  Anything that causes a stress is a stressor

34 Positive and Negative Stress Stress caused by positive events is called eustress  Examples Stress caused by negative events is called distress  Examples

36 Managing Stress Identify the signs of stress Identify the cause of stress Do something about the cause of stress Take action to reduce the harmful effects of stress

37 Example of managing stress Championship soccer game this weekend. You have a stomachache and a headache. You also have difficulty sleeping. Signs of stress: headache, stomachache and difficulty sleeping Identify the cause of stress: excitement and desire to perform well in the soccer game Do something about the cause of stress: practice with a teammate. Talk to your parents, guardian or coach about the stress Take action to reduce the harmful efforts of stress: take a warm bath before bed, relaxation exercises, or other stress busters
