Organisation University of Jyväskylä (JYFL) officially in PHENIX University of Helsinki hosts HIP Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP) participation in int. collider exps (CERN priorized) Detector Laboratory political & financial problems to join PHENIX Helsinki University of Technology M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006

Origin at 80’s along with CERN-based (DELPHI) research at Univ. of Helsinki (UH) and Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) R. Orava, “The SEFT Detector Laboratory and its Role in Finnish High Energy Physics”, report HU – SEFT I 1996 – 04, University of Helsinki. From 2001 in Physicum, Kumpula, as a joint organisation of the Helsinki Institute of Physics and the Department of Physical Sciences of UH 1) Support laboratory for all the HEP-based research in Finland 2) Support for other users, if resources allow for: groups, institutes, companies & Detector Laboratory (DL) in general http://www.hip.fi/research/detlab/index_en.htm M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006

Infrastructure / premises 107,5 m2 clean rooms (class 100 and 1000) + large main laboratory, both shared between HIP and UH projects ALICE until Aug-06 & TOTEM until mid-07 M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006

R&D project possibilities M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006 Internal memo circulated among the involved persons of HIP DL. based on Edward Kistenev’s visit in Helsinki (Aug-06) Proposal: separate prototyping & mass production projects prototyping as R&D efforts, mass production as “service provider”  R&D project considered important since use of existing resources crucial  green light for prototyping in DL

R&D project possibilities M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006 Plan: JYFL provides mechanical workshop for tools MSc Henri Seppänen conducts the prototyping in Helsinki PHENIX provides some manpower for assembly in Helsinki? Crucial: H.S. funded by HIP, Univ. of Helsinki and JYFL (to be confirmed) H.S. is expected to finish his PhD on ultrasonic bond quality during 2007 no costs for equipment & premises for prototyping phase  prototyping feasible from the point of view of DL

Prospects for mass production M. Oinonen, PHENIX Forward Upgrade meeting, Prague, 20-21 Oct 2006 Prototyping should be successful decision upon the mass production relies on prototyping Expectation: mass production as service provider, not an official member of the collaboration co-operation can also take place between an institute and “a service provider”…  to be seen…

Certain spTAB bond height ensures a certain bond strength  Nondestructive quality control for ultrasonic bonds H. Seppänen et al., Proc. of the SPIE Photonics North, September 27-29, 2004, Ottawa, Canada & to be published. SWLI in nondestructive quality control of ultrasonic bonds in 3D H.Seppänen, I.Kassamakov, E.Haeggstrom, M.Oinonen et al. SWLI = Scanning White-Light Interferometry M.
